Clitoral stimulation, in plain terms.
Most women need direct clitoral contact to come reliably during partnered sex. The LoveQuarters guide.
Most women do not reliably orgasm from penetration alone. They need direct clitoral contact, with a hand, mouth, vibrator, or position that allows it.
That fact is the source of most of the orgasm gap. Closing it is mostly a matter of including direct clitoral stimulation as a regular part of partnered sex.

What the clitoris is
The visible part is the small structure at the top of the labia. The full clitoris extends inside the body in two arms that run along either side of the vaginal canal, plus two structures alongside the lower vagina. The whole thing engorges during arousal. The anatomy guide covers it in more detail.
Four ways to stimulate the clitoris
Most women have a strong preference among these.
Finger (manual)
Direct, controllable. Works best with lubricant.
Vibrator
Often the fastest path to orgasm in research.
Position-based grinding
Some positions allow sustained external clitoral contact during penetration.
What we know from research
Herbenick 2018 found that orgasm rates went up sharply when three things were present: direct clitoral contact, longer foreplay, and explicit communication.
Four rules that work
Simple. Effective.
Direct contact, not adjacent
Touch the clitoris itself, not the area around it.
Sustained, not varied
Once you find what produces a clear response, do not change it.
Use lubricant
External clitoral stimulation feels much better with added lubricant.
Plan for 20 minutes minimum
Most women take 15 to 25 minutes of direct stimulation to come.
